About this Event

Rotary District 6400 invites Rotarians, friends and family members to join us in planting 300 trees at the Rotary Legacy Forest Planting, located at Iler Road and Dolson Road. "Rotarians Making a Difference."

World Polio Day - October 24 2020

Poliomyelitis, or polio, is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. Unlike most diseases, polio can be eradicated.

More than 1 million Rotary members have donated their time and money to eradicate polio, and every year, hundreds of members work with health workers to vaccinate children in countries affected by polio. Rotary members work with UNICEF and other partners to prepare and distribute informational materials for people in areas that are isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. They also mobilize to recruit fellow volunteers, assist in transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support.

We would like to acknowledge the significance of planting trees at the Rotary Legacy Forest on October 24 2020 in recognition of the advocacy and funding to eradicate this disease in over 122 countries around the world and of the countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children.

FAQs

What can I bring to the event?

  • Please bring a reusable water bottle with you to the planting event.
  • It may be helpful to bring a towel, an extra pair of socks to change into after planting and some clean shoes for the car ride home.
  • All planting equipment will be provided, but if you have a favourite pair of gardening gloves, feel free to bring them!

What can I wear to the event?

  • Dress for the weather. Late October can bring a wide range of conditions. We recommend dressing in layers, bring extra socks, a towel, rain pants and jacket, hat etc.
  • Wear sturdy footwear such as hiking or rubber boots that is comfortable. This location will be extremely muddy with rough terrain. We do not recommend wearing running shoes.

How do I plant a large potted tree properly?

There are many steps you can take to ensure the long term growth and survival of newly planted large potted trees. Please take a moment to review the tree planting video below provided by the Arbor Day Foundation. ERCA staff will provide a demonstration of how to plant a tree properly at the event for all volunteers as well.
