Rug Hooked Denim Hand Bag

Artist Bio

Trudy's favorite art production these days is fibre art in the form of rug hooking, which she has done for the last ten years. Previously she had a studio where she taught folk art painting, preferring to paint on wooden pieces.
Her rug hooking specialty is wearable art such as ponchos, jackets, bags and purses. She has exhibited her work in both Canada and the United States where she has also taught hooked purses.

Since starting rug hooking Trudy has had her work exhibited in a fine art juried shown under mixed medium and on the cover of the Ontario Rug Hooking magazine and calendar. She has also exhibited at rug hooking shows in Ontario, Florida and Arizona. Trudy prefers to create her own designs, some of which she has taught but has on occasion hooked other artist’s designs particularly for learning specific technique. To better learn rug hooking and wool dying she has attend classes throughout Canada and the United States.

She encourages students to design their own pattern but always has designs ready and available, especially for the beginner hooker. As a resident of the Espanola area Trudy is very pleased to be teaching at the 2017 Espanola Fibre Arts Festival.

The Workshop

This practical project is an enjoyable way to show what you have learnt.

The student will receive a denim purse already made that only requires them to attach the front panel after they have hooked a design of their choice.

Design choices can include fruit, flowers, insects or animals. Participants are also welcome to bring their own simple design in an 8" wide and 10" long size.

In class instruction will include how to put a pattern onto the supplied background fabric, color planning the pattern and how to rug hook the project. One denim pre-made (by Trudy) purse with a pattern and wool to hook the chosen pattern will be provided to you. You will receive written instructions about how to attach the hooked panel to complete your purse. Et voila ! Wearable one - of - a - kind fibre art.
