Event Details

Getting to the starting line doesn't entail just the physical aspect of training, but the mental component as well. Approaching the NYC marathon, we'll gather at this panel to discuss all things run-related; from prepping with a sports psychologist, to understanding the body with an exercise physiologist to hearing testimonial from an NYC Marathon finisher; this panel talk is geared towards all athletes, coaches and the sports community.

All guests will receive the opportunity for complimentary personalized stretches offered by LYMBR, focused on their signature progressive dynamic method to promote muscle recovery.

About the line-up:

Dr. Deborah Roche, Sports Psychology, HSS Women’s Sports Medicine Center

Dr. Deborah Roche is a licensed Counseling Psychologist. She began working with athletes in 1999 during her graduate training where she performed research and applied work in the athletic department at the University of Buffalo. After graduation, Dr. Roche went on to complete a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Delaware where she was hired as Assistant Director for Student Services for Athletes. She worked at Delaware for several years before returning to her hometown in New York and starting her own practice, Counseling and Sport Psychology Services. In her practice she works with athletes of all levels including professionals, US National team members, DI, II, III collegiate, high school and elite and recreational adult athletes. She provides performance and clinical work to her clients as well as consultations to coaches and other athletic administrators. In 2017, Dr. Roche joined the Hospital for Special Surgery Women’s Sports Medicine staff as a part time consultant providing Sport Psychology treatment and consultations at their facilities in NYC and Westchester.

  •  Julie Khan PT, DPT, SCS, USATF-L1, Clinical Specialist James M. Benson Sports Rehabilitation Center, HSS

Julie treats all types of sports injuries, both surgical and non-surgical. She is an avid runner, and enjoys rehabilitating runners and helping them get back to running safely and stronger than before. She has completed 8 marathons and over 20 half marathons.

Through the relationship between HSS and the New York Road Runners (NYRR), Julie has provided support for races throughout New York including the TCS New York City Marathon and United Airlines NYC Half. She also participates in NYRR’s Facebook Live chats, and writes blog posts for their Ask the Experts column.

  • Dr. Marci A. Goolsby, Primary Care Sports Medicine, HSS Women’s Sports Medicine Center

Dr. Marci A. Goolsby is an assistant attending physician at HSS in the Women's Sports Medicine Center and assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. She is board certified in family medicine with a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine. She currently serves as team physician for the WNBA New York Liberty women’s professional basketball team and the US Olympic Biathlon team.

She is a graduate of Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine, completed her residency in family medicine at UCLA and remained at UCLA to complete her fellowship in sports medicine. At UCLA, she worked with the women’s basketball, women's volleyball, softball and baseball teams.

Dr. Goolsby treats patients for a variety of musculoskeletal complaints seeking nonsurgical care. Her main interests are stress fractures and the female athlete triad, which is the related components of nutrition-exercise balance, menstrual function, and bone health. As a prior collegiate basketball player with continued active lifestyle, she understands what it means to be an athlete and focuses on safe return to activity for her patient. She also has a special interest in the care of basketball players, runners and triathletes.

  • Pamela Geisel, Exercise Physiologist, Tisch Sports Performance Center, HSS


Pamela Geisel, MS, CSCS is an Exercise Physiologist and is the manager of Performance Services at HSS. She graduated with honors from Towson University with a bachelor’s in exercise science and received her master’s in exercise physiology from Adelphi University. She is an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and a NSCA certified strength and conditioning specialist. Pam has been in the fitness field since 2007 and has gained knowledge and experience in a variety of settings including corporate wellness, commercial fitness, personal training, and physical therapy clinics. She shares her expertise as a contributing author and presenter for nationally recognized organizations and publications. As a long distance runner herself, she has a special interest in using strength training to maximize performance and reduce injury for runners. In an effort to influence the running community, she created the 4 week program RunFIT, which is held at the Tisch Sports Performance Center.
