Rural Churches and Community Space Virtual Conference
Event Information
About this Event
One church building is closing each week within the United Church of Canada. As many as 1/3 of Canada’s faith buildings overall may be in danger of closing. This represents a huge loss not only for communities of faith but also for the wider community in which they are located.
We invite faith leaders and community members to join an online session to discuss the importance of church buildings to the faith community as well as nonprofit and community groups in a rural setting. The ground-breaking research report, entitled "No Space for Community", will be presented. This two-year study by Faith & the Common Good and partner organizations examined faith building usage and the impact that their closures would have on the not-for-profit services, organizations and community groups that operate out of those buildings
Questions to be discussed include:
- How can we work together to ensure that faith space continues to exist?
- How can we repurpose faith buildings?
- How does the heritage value of faith buildings impact their future usage?
Presenters include:
- Kendra Fry, Faith & the Common Good – presenting “No Space for Community in Ontario Neighbourhoods?” a two-year research project about faith buildings and community usage
- Stephen Collette, Faith & the Common Good – identifying environmental initiatives for communities of faith
- Jennifer Miltenburg, Kingsbridge Centre – engaging a local community in repurposing a church building
