Description

The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, in conjunction with North Dakota Small Organized Schools, is pleased to announce a one-day Rural School Summit. Rural school administrators, teachers, counselors, board members, and parents, along with rural business wonders and other stakeholders are welcome to attend!

The keynote address will be delivered by Ben Winchester of the University of Minnesota Extension Office. Ben specializes in the area of community development. Ben's presentation, "Re-writing the Rural Narrative," will focus on rural issues and the impact they can have on schools.

Breakout sessions will include:

  • Attracting and retaining teachers, dealing with high turnover rates, teacher shortage
  • Funding and financial efficiencies
  • School safety concerns with little police presence in small towns
  • Mental health, along with behavioral, drug, and alcohol counseling
  • Emergency services
  • Transportation
  • Community partnerships
  • Dealing with declining enrollment
  • Technology support for small schools
