About this event

Ruth Wisse’s new memoir features accounts of her relationships with singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen and Nobel Prize winning authors, Saul Bellow and Isaac Bashevis Singer.

Chronicling a life that begins on the run with her and her family’s escape from the Nazis at the age of four, and the transformation of their new Montreal home into a literary and intellectual Casablanca where rafts of fleeing Jewish poets, novelists and thinkers found safe harbor and support for their work, Wisse takes us with her on the path of a trail-blazing, female political refugee who fought to gain equality for Jewish literature and Jewish women in the academy.

Ruth R. Wisse was Professor of Yiddish literature and Comparative Literature at Harvard University from 1993–2014 and before that, helped found the Jewish Studies Department at McGill University. Currently a senior fellow at the Tikvah Fund and recipient of its Herzl Prize, she has written widely on cultural and political subjects for the Wall Street Journal, Commentary, National Affairs, and other publications. Her books include The Schlemiel as Modern Hero, The Modern Jewish Canon: A Journey Through Literature and Culture, No Joke: Making Jewish Humor, If I Am Not for Myself: The Liberal Betrayal of the Jews, and Jews and Power. In 2007, she was awarded the National Medal for the Humanities, and in 2004, an Honorary Degree by Yeshiva University.

Ruth will be interviewd by Shelley Pomerance, an arts journalist, editor and translator who has worked for the CBC and written for Centreville magazine the Montreal Gazette, University and most recently as a programmer for the Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival.

Ruth will be introduced by Eva Roskies Raby who worked at the Jewish Public Library for 28 years: the first 17 of those as the Director of the Norman Berman Children’s Library and then the last 11 as Executive Director of the organization. She now sits on the Board of Directors as an active consultant. Full disclosure for those who might not otherwise know: Eva and Ruth are sisters.
