Deep Dark Woods’ newest album Yarrow boldly displays how front man and creative force Ryan Boldt managed to survive the past couple of years by putting his faith in the natural healing power of his own songwriting. Although regarded as one of Canada’s finest roots rock bands, The Deep Dark Woods, for various reasons, ceased activities after touring in support of their 2013 album Jubilee. Boldt was left to decide his next move and ultimately chose to continue under The Deep Dark Woods banner.The result is a brilliant nine-track collection produced by fellow Saskatchewan native Shuyler Jansen, and featuring a new band line-up including Clayton Linthecum of the acclaimed duo Kacy & Clayton. The concept of ancient themes distilled through a modern production aesthetic is encapsulated in Yarrow’s first focus track, “Fallen Leaves,” which sets the tone for the entire album.Whether or not the tag roots music still applies, the essence of Yarrow are the stories it tells.
