Event description

Description

There have been over 175 overdoses within the past week in the DTES. The state of emergency declared by the government has not made things move faster for folks on the street and in community.

Tickets available here: https://safeinjectioncomedy.eventbrite.ca/

The Overdose Prevention Society is on the ground providing emergency services in a state of emergency. It costs them $150 to run a tent per day. This is a direct action that matters. Respect and credit go to Ann Livingston, Sarah Blyth and their crew of volunteers for their commitment to harm reduction and care.

Can laughing help in adverse times? We think so.

Tickets to this night of comedy and community are $20 via Eventbrite and at the door (if this doesn't sell out) and all of the money raised will go directly to their responsive, life-saving work. Doors at 7pm, Show starts at 8pm. General seating, so come early.

Big love and thanks Mo Tarmohamed at The Rickshaw for generously donating the space for free, so let's fill it!

This night of funny is conceived and hosted by comedian Mark B. Hughes who has made waves in Vancouver joking about his own story with addiction, the DTES and the prison system via his stand-up and his one man show Tragedy + Time Served = Comedy, which was a hit at this year's Vancouver Fringe. Mark is the perfect pilot to navigate through a night of laughs in the face of challenges.

Helping organize is comedian Emma Cooper of Rape is Real & Everywhere and Shit Harper Did, because what event can't use jokes from a funny, empathic, queer hipster? (Don't answer that).

The amazing roster of comedians donating their time and talent includes:

Melanie Rose - A seasoned veteran of the Vancouver scene, signed with Yuk Yuks, Melanie works in the DTES and sees firsthand how overdoses have impacted the community.

Katie-Ellen Humphries - You've perhaps heard her on CBC "The Debaters", seen her at Pemberton Fest, San Fransisco Sketch Fest
or Just For Laughs NorthWest. Her sharp wit also comes in handy as a panelist on "Morgan Brayton & Other People" (OUT-TV).

Brett Martin - This nationally touring headliner has been see on CTV, The Comedy Network, and as the host of "The Brett Martin Show."
His album "Free Trips to Afghanistan" is on iTunes. He loves cats.

Harris Anderson - A fixture in the Vancouver scene, this hilarious human has opened for the legendary Mike MacDonald.

Joey Commisso - Recently did a Tedx Talk, performed at JFL Northwest on a show featuring Mental Health and showcased for NBC's 'Stand Up for Diversity.'

San Aung - This local funnyhuman hosts Showcase Sundays at The Belmont Bar and is back from performing comedy around BC.

...And our headliner, Dylan Rhymer! - For 20 years Dylan Rhymer has delighted and challenged audiences all over the world with his intelligent, provocative and fast-paced brand of stand-up comedy. Rhymer explores social issues, philosophy and current events through the lens of his own insecurities and stupid shortcomings in a way that everyone can relate to. He has a sharp and imaginative style that thrills audiences while encouraging them to think. Edgy, charming and hilarious, Dylan Rhymer is truly in a class of his own.

His credits include:
