Event description

Description

In recognition of Mental Health Week, you will save $25 on your safeTALK ticket purchase.

ABOUT THE TRAINING:
Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die but are struggling with the pain in their lives. In safeTALK, which is a three and a half hour suicide prevention workshop, participants, regardless of
prior experience or training, will gain knowledge about how to help a person that is thinking about suicide connect to the support they require. In the safeTALK training participants will learn to:

• Identify people who may have thoughts of suicide
• Ask them directly about the possibility of suicide, then
• Connect them to life-saving community supports and resources.

THIS WORKSHOP IS PART OF A UNIVERSITY STUDY

Jennifer White from the University of Victoria, and Patti Ranahan from Concordia University are conducting a study entitled Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training in British Columbia: An Ethnographic Study of a Provincial Implementation Strategy and will be observing this safeTALK workshop. If you choose not to be observed for the purposes of the research, please contact info.midisland@cmha.bc.ca or call 250-244-4042 ext. 101 to inquire about joining an alternate workshop scheduled at another time. You are being asked to participate in the research as an individual and not as a representative of your employer or organization. Immediately following the safeTALK workshop, you can choose to stay for a 60-minute focus group interview. Refreshments will be provided. If you wish more information about participating in this study, please contact us directly and in confidence at jhwihite@uvic.ca or Patti.Ranahan@concordia.ca or by phone at (250) 721-7986.

PLEASE NOTE

Talking about suicide can be difficult, especially if you have recently been impacted by a suicide attempt or death. Healing from these tragic events can take months or years, so we encourage you to take time for healing before attending suicide intervention training.

If you have experienced a suicide death healing support is available at BC Bereavement Helpline 1-877-779-2223, and www.bcbereavementhelpline.com.

You can also access information and support at: Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention, www.suicideprevention.ca/grieving/suicide-grief/.
