Event description

Description

Glenbow’s Salon Series returns! Join us for intimate and insightful conservation while we take a deep dive into this season’s feature exhibitions. Curator Travis Lutley will lead and tour and discussion informed by the vast amount of research that went into the epic exhibition The Arctic: Real and Imagined Views from the Nineteenth Century.

The Arctic: Real and Imagined Views from the Nineteenth Century depicts 16 separate Arctic expeditions between 1818 and 1876 that contributed to near-mythical ideas about the far north. The exhibition examines the enduring colonial iconography of Canada’s North as a by-product of the age of British Arctic expansion. Inuit cultural consultants, Sophia Lebessis and James Kuptana, provide an Inuit perspective on the content and themes that are addressed in the exhibition, which includes both Indigenous and European artifacts to provide added context and a sense of reality to the world depicted in these nineteenth century artworks - a world in which the real was often indistinguishable from the imagined.
