The International Ensembles are an opportunity for individual improvisers the world over to spend a week workshopping new and new-to-them improv forms. Dozens of performers apply for a handful of spots and work with guest directors to create evening performances live for you, our audience.
This year our TWO INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLES include performers who live in Toronto, Phoenix, San Diego, Calgary, Los Angeles, Portland, New York, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal and Vancouver, who have toured across Canada, across the US, and internationally, who are writers, actors, directors, musicians and stand up comedians (when they’re not improvising, of course). They are television stars, Artistic Directors of theatres, comedy and theatre award winners, teachers, friends and lovers. They’re also all gifted improvisers, and they’re all here to entertain you.
One thing is certain — the International Ensembles are groups of people who will likely never all work together again. In some cases, you’d have to travel pretty far to see any of them on their home turf. Now you can enjoy all of them, without even leaving your seat.
Vancouver TheatreSports League - Vancouver
Vancouver TheatreSports™ League (VTSL) began in 1980 and is now a local institution and a worldwide phenomenon – producing and staging some of the most daring and innovative improv in the world.
Boasting six International Improv Comedy Awards and starring in several television specials, Vancouver TheatreSports™ League first opened their doors at the Back Alley Theatre, where they consistently drew cult-like, capacity crowds. They continue to wow audiences at The Improv Centre on Granville Island performing to more than 50,000 enthusiasts yearly, 5 nights a week, 52 weeks per year.
Vancouver TheatreSports™ League’s brand of improvisation is a highly theatrical fusion of the dramatic elements of comedy and tragedy coupled with the enthusiasm and edge-of-your-seat excitement of professional sport.
Limbo Land - New York City
LimboLand. One man. Four chairs. Unlimited characters. LimboLand is a one man tour-de-force. Veteran actor/improvisor T.J. Mannix plays every role in a completely improvised, music-fueled show. Whether duetting with himself or playing eight family members at the same time, T.J. mines the humor, passion, and dark sides that make us irresistible. At the mercy of Music Director James Rushin, any character can be forced to skillfully break into song.
LimboLand harkens back to the days of the Compass Players and improvised theater. Some shows are funny. Some have had the audience in tears. Usually it is a mix of both. Honest, well defined characters coming alive – with musical accompaniment.
Rapid Fire Theatre's - Sneak Peek - Edmonton
In a world… where every film… is advertised with a trailer… Movie buffs Joe Vanderhelm, Paul Blinov and Matt Schuurman from Rapid Fire Theatre each secretly select a trailer for an actual upcoming film and screen them live in front of the audience. The audience chooses their favourite trailer, then the three men save you $13.75 at Cineplex by acting out the film in its entirety, with only the trailer as their inspiration.
Sneak Peek has been featured at Improvaganza, Big City Improv Festival, and regularly headlines at Rapid Fire Theatre’s Chimprov.
