Event description

Description

Early-career & emerging doc filmmakers! Learn how to get your film projects funded, made, and seen.

In this dynamic, interactive crash course, we’ll break down some of the essentials you’ll need to know for a sustainable career in film:

  • how to pitch & communicate your ideas to funders
  • the basics of professional film production
  • how to use the festival circuit to build your career

With guests that will include working filmmakers, festival programmers, and industry professionals, this program will offer valuable insight into the behind-the-scenes of how to make it as a filmmaker.

While this workshop will focus on documentary-specific examples, the takeaways will be applicable to indie narrative filmmakers at the start of their career, too.

Workshop Leader

Chanda Chevannes
Chanda Chevannes
Filmmaker, Writer, & Educator

Chanda’s new feature documentary, Unfractured, is a triumphant film about fighting with your whole heart. The opening night film at this year’s Planet in Focus International Environmental Film Festival, Unfractured follows biologist and mother Sandra Steingraber as she reinvents herself as an outspoken activist in order to wage an environmental war that many believe is unwinnable.

Previously, Chanda made the award-winning documentary Living Downstream, which was broadcast on six continents and seen by four million people. She has authored several educational resources, two blogs for the National Film Board of Canada’s CitizenSHIFT website, and a monthly column for Troy Media. Chanda trained as an arts educator with the Royal Conservatory and was recently an Innovator in Communities with the Toronto Public Library, leading filmmaking workshops in the city’s underserved communities. She is currently an instructor at Centennial College’s Story Arts Centre.

It’s currently airing on HBO, The Movie Network, Movie Central, The Sundance Channel and CBC Documentary. Famed cult filmmaker John Waters put Fly Colt Fly on his 10 Best Films of 2015 list.
