Event description
Taking a closer look at Community Alternatives to Policing in Scarborough!

About this event

The Scarborough Community Safety Forum is an online forum for Scarborough residents and community members to engage in meaningful dialogue about community safety in Scarborough.

The forum will review the City of Toronto’s Safe TO: A Community & Safety Well-Being Plan which looks at a different approach to advancing community safety and Toronto Neighbourhood Centres’ Rethinking Community Safety Report, which explores Community Alternatives to Policing.

Using that information and knowledge, we will take a closer look at policing in the city, discuss alternatives that prioritize safety and well-being, and address the needs of neighbourhoods and community members who disproportionately bear the brunt of systemic racism, ongoing surveillance, criminalization, and violence in policing.

In particular, we have put together five breakout rooms that participants can join to further unpack an “area of immediate action” in the context of community safety. These areas include Youth, Mental Health, Race/Immigration, Disability, and General.

When re-imagining community safety, we can look to alternatives that will prioritize community-led, non-violent, public safety and outreach initiatives that are proven to keep communities safe. We hope the outcomes of this forum will lead to ideas on tangible steps towards sustainable practices to community safety in Scarborough including concrete feedback for the City’s Safe TO plan.

You can find the agenda for the forum here. Have any questions or concerns? Contact us at scarboroughcivicaction@gmail.com.

**Note: the forum will be held over Zoom**
