Event description
A German Giant: The Legacy of Heinrich Schütz

About this event

This year’s festival explores the beginnings of the baroque in Germany, and highlights the music of Heinrich Schütz, a towering figure who died 350 years ago and whose influence on the course of musical history was profound, through his performing and teaching, and through his bringing together diverse national trends in his works. Considered the most important German composer before J.S. Bach, he stands alongside Monteverdi as one of the greatest composers of Western music in the 17th century. He established the North German organ school, which culminated in the music of Bach, and taught many of the following generation of composers and organists, as well as influencing those in later times, such as Brahms in the 19th century and Webern in the 20th.
