Description

Prof. Cynthia Goh discusses her mission to use science to benefit society
Doors open at 4:45 pm | Talk begins at 5:10 pm | Q&A and Networking at 6:00 pm

"More than a billion people in the world live without electricity—how do we bring light to them?"

Prof. Goh asked this question back in 2015 during the UNESCO International Year of Light and challenged her team at the Impact Centre to develop technology that can illuminate remote villages in the developing world. Prof. Goh believes that light is an enabler: if we can extend the day by four or five hours we can improve lives by giving people extra time to learn, work, and escape the cycle of poverty. The team then set for itself a goal to develop a solar-powered LED lamp that can be sold for less than $20 CAD.

In this talk, Prof. Goh will shine light on how technology development for the global south does not simply involve taking existing products, making them cheaper, and parachuting them into villages. She and her team performed extensive surveys to learn how people used light, the mechanics of the local economy, and how people can pay for the lights. They used the data to guide the design of various prototypes, improving efficiencies with each iteration. Prof. Goh will recount her trip to install 42 solar lamps in the mountain village of Napsan in the Philippines this past December and speak about the next steps for this inspiring project.

Prof. Goh also will let students know how they can join the effort or start their own project to bring science to society.

As this is a free public event, we know that not everyone who registers for tickets attends. To make sure as many people are accomodated as possible, we allocate more tickets than there are seats. We do our best to get the numbers right, but unfortunately we occasionally have to disappoint people at the door. Admission is on a first come, first served basis, so please arrive in good time for the start of the event.
