Description

Ordinary Shadows, Chinese Shade

1988, 89 minutes, colour, sound, in Chinese with English Subtitles

Paul Wong uses his second-generation Chinese-Canadian perspective to frame the Chinese here in the new world, Canada, and in the motherland, China. This is an intimate, personal view. Through his own “family network” and several trips to the People’s Republic of China, Wong gained access to the everyday, non-exotic world of the Chinese. A picture emerges of displaced cultures and traditions in transition.

* Tickets to the video screenings include access to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

* Food is not allowed in the garden, but visitors are welcome to have a cup of complimentary jasmine tea in the Hall of One Hundred Rivers.

Ordinary Shadows, Chinese Shade is the first feature work of OCCUPYING CHINATOWN, Paul Wong’s year-long artist residency at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Classical Garden. Wong will be creating a series of discreet works and interdisciplinary artworks based on 700 letters in Chinese sent by 90 writers to his mother Suk-Fong Wong.

This residency will evoke within this space memories and loss for the generations of Chinese-Canadi- ans who built a community within a segregated Chinatown. OCCUPYING CHINATOWN throughout the seasons will feature collaborative contemporary works of art in exhibition with various artists, and will engage visitors and community with diverse programming, workshops, performances, events, and a book.

OCCUPYING CHINATOWN is a public art project funded by the City of Vancouver’s Artist-Initiated Commission series, with support from BC Arts Council and in association with Dr. Sun Yat-sen Chinese Classical Garden.
