Event description

Description

"When designers work on complex social sector issues, they often enter situations with power inherently given to them (even if they don’t realize it)." - George Aye

While dialogue around power and privilege has come up in open spaces and table conversations at various SDX gatherings over the years, this is the first dedicated session to exploring these concepts. As such, it represents the beginning of an ongoing exploration for SDX.

Together, we will explore the concepts of power, power assymmetry, and privilege and how they make themselves tangible. We will do this together through both conversation and play.

  • Doors Open: 12:45 p.m.
  • Program Begins: 1:15 p.m.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants understand the concepts of power, power asymmetry, and privilege.
  • Participants are better able to identify how power and privilege intersect, and to what effect.
  • Participants understand the benefits of acknowledging and addressing power asymmetries in systemic design and leave with some tools to help them begin this ongoing work.

Audience:

  • People who want an opportunity to reflect on how power and privilege show up in their life and work, including their own.
  • People who work with others in a problem-solving, design, or facilitation capacity and are looking for ways to acknowledge and begin to address power asymmetries in both processes and outputs.

I can't make it. Is my ticket transferable?

Yes. You are welcome to give your ticket to someone else should you become unable to attend. Please ask them to check-in at the door upon arrival.

What's up with the registration fee?

SDX charges a small registration fee to help cover the costs associated with hosting. Registration fees can vary depending on the costs associated with a particular event - catering, travel, guest presenters, etc. We believe that we offer high quality, unique, and affordable learning and networking opportunities in the systemic design and systems change space.

Where can I find more information about SDX?

I have an idea I would like to explore at SDX. What's my first step?

Great! If you have an idea you would like to explore with SDX or are interested in leading a session, we'd love to chat. We are happy to use our convening power to explore a suitable idea or challenge. Connect with us.
