Event description

Description

The celebration of 20 years of the Sea Around Us will be a full-day event on June 28, 2019, on the beautiful Point Grey campus of the University of British Columbia.

During this event, our invited speakers will talk briefly (typically 10 minutes) of their or their institution’s collaboration with the Sea Around Us and most importantly, advise us for the future.

Speakers range from representatives of the philanthropic foundations that supported us through our 20 years of existence, representatives of environmental NGOs, scientists working on ocean issues and current and former students associated with the Sea Around Us.

Besides our own Daniel Pauly, Deng Palomares and Dirk Zeller, and Evgeny Pakhomov from the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, we have confirmed presentations by John Tanzer (WWF), David Suzuki (Suzuki Foundation), Steve Box (Rare), among others.

Join us and help us shape our vision for the future of the Sea Around Us such that it becomes even more useful to the global ocean community.

And…

We also hope that our invitees will take the opportunity, before or after the event of June 28, 2019, to visit, on the UBC campus, the Beaty Biodiversity Museum and the nearby Geology Museum, and especially our spectacular Museum of Anthropology.

Given sufficient expressions of interest, we might also consider organizing a visit to a fisheries museum located in a former salmon cannery, and a major attraction near Vancouver.
