Description

Join critically-acclaimed authors Hannah Mary McKinnon and Marissa Stapley as they present their recently published suspense novels, Her Secret Son and The Last Resort. The authors will discuss the art of crafting suspense thrillers, tips for aspiring writers, and the state of commercial fiction in Canada. Moderated by writer and reviewer Kerry Clare, author of Mitzi Bytes.

Hannah Mary McKinnon's Her Secret Son is "an intricate tangle of family secrets" (K.A. Tucker) and a "fast-paced, twisty thriller" (Booklist) featuring a bereaved boyfriend seeking answers about the mysterious origins of his deceased partner's son. McKinnon is also the author of The Neighbors, "a graphic, gritty exploration of unfulfilled desire and deceit with an explosive finale that readers won't forget anytime soon'' (Mary Kubica, author of The Good Girl).

Dark secrets from the past are also a central feature of Marissa Stapley's The Last Resort. As a hurricane bears down on a couples retreat from which the therapist has disappeared, everyone is suspect in a story which "...harnesses women’s anger…. The story’s emotional core is wrapped in a taut thriller" (Toronto Star). “Featuring vivid, heart-pounding storytelling and a compelling depiction of the heartbreaking ways that long-term abuse can destroy your will, Stapley's latest is an excellent beach read for anyone who loves romantic suspense.” (Booklist)

Event moderator Kerry Clare is a National Magazine Award-nominated writer and editor of the anthology The M Word: Conversations About Motherhood. Her essays, reviews and short fiction have appeared most recently in The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, Joyland and Canadian Notes & Queries.
