Secure the Bag: Virtual Workshop Series

This interactive and discussion-based online workshop series offers youth (15-30) the opportunity to better understand money management and to develop their skills for a sound financial future. In partnership with TD Bank’s Money Matters Program, we are offering 4 workshops in the coming weeks.

Workshop 1: Budgeting and Spending Plans

MONDAY JULY 13, 2020 (4pm-5pm)

Tired of empty pockets? Struggling to make it to the next payday?

In this workshop, you will learn how to create and manage your budget with the help of a Spending Plan. A Spending Plan is key to ensuring you have enough money to meet your needs and goals. It will also help you find ways to save for the future.

Workshop 2: Banking Basics

MONDAY JULY 20, 2020 (4pm-5pm)

Should you open a savings or chequing account? Should payday loans be avoided?

In this workshop, you will learn about banks and banking, and the choices available to you. You’ll learn about personal bank accounts, and which type might best suit you and your money needs. You’ll learn about what a bank can do for you, and how it can save you money.

Workshop 3: Borrowing Money

MONDAY JULY 27, 2020 (4pm-5pm)

How can you borrow money smartly to avoid debt? What’s credit?

In this workshop, you will learn about credit—what it is, how to use it wisely, and how to get it under control when your debt is too big to handle. You’ll take a look at different kinds of credit and the cost of borrowing. You’ll learn ways to avoid the costs piling up, so that if you need to borrow money, it is there for you.

Workshop 4: RESPs & Other Ways To Save

MONDAY AUGUST 10, 2020 (4pm-5pm)

Looking to maximize your savings? Save for the future?

In this workshop, you will take a look at ways of making the money you save grow over time. You’ll learn about registered savings plans to help you get ready for your future.

This workshop series was developed by SLYE & YouthReach in partnership with Money Matters.

SLYE is a youth-led, grassroots project with the mission of increased community engagement and equitable access to services for all Toronto youth!

YouthReach is a Toronto-based program serving youth with complex barriers to employment who are in need of one-on-one employment counselling or referrals to appropriate community resources.

Money Matters is a free introductory financial literacy program for adult learners. It was developed by ABC Life Literacy Canada in partnership with the Government of Canada and TD Bank Group, and was designed by literacy practitioners.
