Smart cities use information and communication technologies to enrich the quality and performance of urban services such as, energy, health care, law enforcement, transportation and utilities. Parking apps that show the nearest empty parking spot or solar powered light poles that are capable of measuring air pollutants or the ability to test for lead content in water in real time are all examples of smart cities. Smart cities can be efficient, livable, sustainable urban areas of technological advancements.

These technologies however raise many important security and privacy issues because of massive connectivity and data collection. Technologies may also have unintended consequences and bring with them new challenges.  The workshop provides a forum for academia and other stakeholders to discuss this very important topic of direct relevance to the City of Calgary.  The workshop consists of two panels and an open question and answer period.
Panel : Now and the Future: Where are we now and where do we go from here?
This panel will talk about the current technologies being used to secure our cities. The discussion will revolve around the use of technology versus the cost of privacy and its impact on the local citizens.

Panel II: Unintended consequences.
In this panel we will focus on unidentified consequences of technologies, systems and policies. How smartness can assist in cities (and subsequently citizens) achieve a higher standard of living and what are the unintended consequences of this from the technical perspective?
