Event Details
Volunteers across Canada recently made a commitment to help Canadian journalists get up-to-speed with basic online security practices. As a start, security "boot camps” for professional reporters will be held across the country starting in May with this event in Vancouver. There is a similar event happening in Toronto later in the month.
In Vancouver, we are going to start with a small, hands-on workshop that will help you to:
- Assess your own security risk level
- Understand how security fails and why
- Install the necessary software to protect your identity, and your sources' identities, online
We will have several mentors attending who will be available to answer your questions and to assist with the installation of Tails, Tor bundle, and GPG Tools (or equivalent for encryption using PGP). Once installed, we will practice using these tools as a group and take the "I want to keep my sources secure" challenge.
It may sound dry, but we promise that it will be fun, fast, and will involve at least one game! You will leave with the tools and knowledge needed to feel more secure about protecting your own privacy online, as well as that of your sources.
We hope you'll join us for this first event and help us make it a success.
