Event description

Description

Join Conservation Halton staff for a morning at Glenorchy Conservation Area in North Oakville to assist in hands-on activities to restore grassland and wetland ecosystems.

Volunteers will gain experience in restoration techniques through the collection of native seed from tallgrass prairie and wetland ecosystems. This seed will be planted at a later date on a newly acquired Conservation Halton property in Hamilton that is undergoing restoration initiatives. The collected native, locally sourced seed is needed to take this old agricultural field and turn it into a beautiful native landscape for people and wildlife to enjoy.

What you will be doing: You will be hand collecting seed through a variety of methods. You may be stooping and bending throughout the day. To reach the site you must be able to walk 1.5 kilometres along an open agricultural field from the designated parking lot.

What to bring: practical clothing for being outdoors all morning and in all weather, water bottle, snacks for yourself, shoes suitable for walking on uneven ground (no sandals), work gloves if you have them (some will be provided), hat, sunglasses, and enthusiasm!

Where we will meet: We will be meeting at Palermo Park parking lot and then together making our way into Glenorchy Conservation Area from there.

The event will go rain or shine. Please dress appropriately (you will get dirty!).

Thank you to the support from TD Friends of the Environment to make this initiative happen.
