Segregation & Isolation: Mental Health and The Justice System
Event Information
About this Event
Canadian Association of Muslim Women in Law will be hosting on November 27, 2019 an engaging and informative event that will address Segregation and Isolation in Canadian provincial and federal prisons, which have led to inhumane consequences for individuals who are on remand or incarcerated.
Ontario Human Rights Commission have conducted in-depth research on Segregation and Isolation within Canadian Correctional Facilities. Its published report found that Segregation is overused in both provincial and federal correctional systems — which consequently causes particular harm to vulnerable groups, such as Black and Indigenous prisoners, women, and people with mental health disabilities. At this event, lawyers with expertise in human rights and criminal law will clarify the status of the law in Ontario around the use of segregation and how to effectively advocate for individuals with mental health issues inside Correctional institutions.
