SEND + RECEIVE: A FESTIVAL OF SOUND

V. 21

OCTOBER 17-20 2019

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17

VOR (CA)

TOSHIMARU NAKAMURA (JP)

CECILIA LOPEZ (AR) - RED

aceartinc. (290 McDermot Avenue, second floor)

7:30pm

Our third decade commences with the doom-laden electronics of Winnipeg's VOR, whose mysterious voicings emerge out of ominous thrum. Toshimaru Nakamura's no-input mixing board is an iconic instrument in its own right, from which an eerie rhythmicity emanates beneath his master touch. Cecilia Lopez's permutating project, Red, gradually unveils layers of sculpturized feedback in response to the space of the performance.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18

MIRA MARTIN-GRAY (CA)

ZACHARY JAMES WATKINS (US)

SOUND OF THE MOUNTAIN (QC) with TETUZI AKIYAMA (JP) and TOSHIMARU NAKAMURA (JP)

aceartinc. (290 McDermot Avenue, second floor)

7:30pm

This evening’s concert features Toronto-based artist Mira Martin-Gray, whose work plumbs the infinite soundscapes immanent to the mixing board; Oakland-based guitarist Zachary James Watkins, whose compositions and improvisations converge upon physical resonance; and Montréal duo Sound of the Mountain, in a recently convened quartet with Japanese improvisers Tetuzi Akiyama and Toshimaru Nakamura, all of whom share an affinity for mixing acoustic and electric elements and challenging the physical possibilities of their materials.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19

ELLEN ARKBRO (SW) - CHORDS for organ

TETUZI AKIYAMA (JP)

Crescent Fort Rouge United Church (525 Wardlaw Avenue)

7:30 pm

This evening’s concert brings together two utterly distinct solo performers, investigating the physical capacities of their respective mediums. Japanese improviser Tetuzi Akiyama boldly and delicately engages the guitar, attempting to convert its body into an electronic entity, while Swedish composer and sound-artist Ellen Arkbro blends organ and electronics, examining the materiality and harmonic quality of chords and extending the timbral character of her instrument. Presented in partnership with GroundSwell.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20

ERIK TISU (CA)

CHLOE ALEXANDRA THOMPSON (US)

RUSALKA (CA)

aceartinc. (290 McDermot Avenue, second floor)

7:30pm

Our final evening is a study in contrasting sound worlds. Erik Tisu unfurls evocatively lo-fi vistas of DIY concrète. Chloe Alexandra Thompson's spatialized synthesis immerses the listener in a sea of discretely fascinating sonic detail. Vancouver's Rusalka draws subtle and shifting dynamics out of the turbulence of harsh noise. Presented in partnership with Eye and Ear Control Records.
