Event description

Description

Join us for the Seneca Leadership Program's Seneca Serves Day.

Your opportunity to take part in an excellent leadership in action opportunity: Seneca Serves.

On Friday, January 12, 2018 take part in an excellent Leadership in Action opportunity, Seneca Serves. This campus-wide community service learning experience organized by the Student Life team will allow you to participate in a Community Service Learning experience by volunteering with a community organization. Put your leadership skills into action and support the efforts of local non-profit organizations.

After the service component, participants reflect on their experiences. This discussion is meant to draw out themes of the day and encourage participants to consider how these themes apply to their daily life and academics.
The following opportunities are available:

MILKBAGS Unlimited (http://milkbagsunlimited.ca/)

MILKBAGS Unlimited was launched by Angela Kesthely in Toronto, Ontario following the devastating Haitian Earthquake of 2010. The milk bag mats offer people without beds, an invaluable, durable and washable alternative to sleeping on the often cold and damp ground. Not only can these milk-bag mats provide comfort as a bedding alternative, but have been used by health-care professionals as a make-ready substitute for an operating bed/table where resources are scarce. It takes approximately 400 milk bags to make an adult sized mat.

When: When: Friday, January 12, 2018: 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Meet at 10:00 am on Friday, January 12, 2017, at the Newnham Campus inside Student Services in Room D2014.

Details of Experience: Students will receive instruction on how to prepare and weave milk bags into mats. Participants will be grouped and assigned different tasks such as cutting strips for the mats and tying knots and weaving bags using a wooden frame to assemble mats into a finished product.
