Description

Substance use disorders in adults aged 65 and up is on the rise. Come and learn about treatment for addictions in seniors within a harm reduction framework.

Some topics to be explored:

  • Relationship between addictions in the older populations with comorbidities like dementia, mental illness and brain injuries.

  • Screening Assessment for substance use disorders in seniors

  • Stigma within the older population which create barriers to treatment

  • Solution focused counselling techniques and case studies

Speaker: Marilyn White-Campbell is a Geriatric Addiction Specialist, clinician and educator practicing for over 30 years. Marilyn is considered a pioneer in the field of geriatric addictions as part of one of the first specialized treatment programs for older adults in Canada. She has worked both in the community outreach component of care as well as residents in long term care who have responsive behaviors with substance misuse. She is the provincial Lead for Geriatric Addictions and co-chair of the Behavioral Supports Ontario Older Adult Substance Use collaborative.
