Event description

Description

Awareness of sensory processing challenges have increased exponentially in children over the past 25 years. Stores increasingly have sensory hours, movie theatres schedule sensory screenings, and more and more schools are developing sensory spaces for children to address their sensory processing needs in a proactive manner. But what happens when children with sensory processing challenges grow up? How do sensory processing challenges impact adolescents and adults?

Adults and adolescents with sensory processing challenges often find it difficult to process and act upon information received through the senses. This can lead to difficulty performing routines and activities involved in work, fostering close relationships, and participating in leisure and recreation. This results in increased risks for anxiety and depression, underachievement, social isolation, challenging behaviours, and other secondary effects.

The purpose of this workshop is to build awareness of the everyday challenges as well as the social and emotional issues that adults and adolescents with sensory processing challenges face, to offer practical advice on living with sensory processing needs, and to ensure participants leave with a plethora of concrete, easy-to-implement strategies that are appropriate and effective with adults and adolescents.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of common sensory processing challenges and how they can present in adults and adolescents.
  • Learn key strategies for supporting sensory processing needs in adolescents and adults. Topics include strategies for:
