Event Details

On Sunday April 27th, 2014, the next Sepp Holzer Hugelkultur bed will be created in Victoria. Want to learn how and be a part of building it?

You may have heard the word before, Hugelkultur, meaning "mound culture" in German. However even if a friend says "I've got a hugelkultur" and you've seen a small 3' high raised garden bed, you've only scratched the surface of this incredible growing ecology. Standard Holzer Hugelkultur's are 6' tall and incorporate not 1 or 2 but over 20 different species of annuals and self seeding annuals for an incredible amount of food production.

Javan Bernakevitch of Permaculture BC will be leading the installation. At 6' tall with over 20 different species and a wood core, the principles and hands on installation of this "mound culture" will be covered in this day long workshop. (By "day long" we mean it could take a 4, 5, 6, or even 12 hours depending on the 'zest' of those participating! It's all up to you).

Why come?

1) You'll learn from someone who's been taught from Sepp Holzer himself.

2) You'll put the theory into practice. After an hour long introduction to the principles of hugelkultur, we'll begin installation.

3) Price -  $60 suggested (Sliding scale available, send us a message, if you want to come, we want you to come :)

4) People - connect with others in the area working to expand local food production and who are committed to helping other Victorians get their own food production up and running.

5) Support those that support the local food community. Proceeds from this workshop will go towards continuing permaculture education. In turn, that education will make it's way back into the local community.

6) Blitz Karma - make friends who will come help you with your own yard/garden blitz.

(see if you would like help to blitz your own property into a garden).

What can you expect?

9am: Gathering at an urban site in Victoria, the day will start with a short community building session followed by an introduction to Holzer Agroecology. After which we'll dive into the world of hugelkultur.

10am: the workflow of the day will be reviewed, and then the hugelkultur installation will begin.

There will be a bathroom and water on site. Nitrogenous wastes are encouraged to be put into the hugelkultur.

Stew/chili lunch will be provided, if you feel inclined to bring a dish to share, please do! :-D
