Event description

Description

Dear Parents/Caregivers with a child/teen with special needs:

I have been working with children with diverse abilities since I was 14 years old. As an educator of 23 years, I have supported and watched parents who are raising children with special needs. The challenge is great whether the focus is on toileting, undesirable behaviours, communication or all of the above. Due to overwhelm, sexual health is often put on the back burner. Unfortunately, delaying these conversations can cause challenging situations in the future at school and in the community. I would like to offer parents some simple tips on how to raise children in a sex positive home while increasing their child's abuse resistance.

These workshops are also geared to support ECE, E.A.'s and care-workers who support this population.

In this workshop you will learn about…

  1. What is sexuality?
  2. The Circles of Sexuality
  3. Messaging directed towards youth with special needs
  4. Why teach sexual health education to teens with special needs?
  5. Risk factors
  6. Teaching to chronological age as opposed to cognitive age.
  7. What teens need to know and when
  8. Modifying sexuality topics
  9. Delivery methods
  10. Resources, books, Apps, etc.
