Event description
Boundary Bay Regional Park Needs Your Help!

About this Event

As part of our 10th Anniversary Celebrations, SFU’s Faculty of Environment invites you to our environmental stewardship challenge at Boundary Bay Regional Park on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 being hosted in partnership with MetroVancouver, Regional Parks and SFU’s Alumni Association and Sustainability Office.

Our goal is to plant 2,000 native shrubs and trees to assist the ecological restoration efforts of MetroVancouver’s Regional Parks Team and we need your help! Invasive Himalayan Blackberry has been removed from Boundary Bay's 12th Avenue Dyke Trail berm and we will be replacing it with native species like arbutus, bitter cherry, sword fern, and salmonberry to increase plant biodiversity and to provide habitat and food for native birds, pollinators and wildlife.

Rain or shine we will be planting but please come prepared. Dress in layers to stay warm or dry. Closed toe shoes required, work gloves recommended.

Join us in learning about and restoring this important ecosystem.

This event is free but registration is required. Waivers must be completed in advance. Download the waiver and submit to lauriew@sfu.ca

Why get involved?

Boundary Bay is an incredibly valuable and ecologically important coastal ecosystem with extensive mudflats, eel grass beds, saltmarsh, beach dunes, meadow, and forest zones. These diverse transitional habitats support a wide range of wildlife including birds, shellfish, fish, mammals and invertebrates. As part of the Pacific Flyway, 1.5 million birds - 225 species - from 10 countries use the park each year. Join us in learning about and restoring this important site, and having fun with other SFU students, staff, faculty and alumni.

Parking

The 12th Avenue parking lot is closed because of construction. Limited parking for volunteers is available along 12th avenue before the lot. Carpooling is strongly encouraged.
