Description

Are you an outdoor enthusiast or someone who just wants to learn a few skills to enjoy the outdoors more? Then please join us at Shade's Mills Park. Through hands-on experience you will learn valuable outdoor skills. These sessions will cover three essential skills: fire making, navigation and shelter building. The program has something for everyone; the beginners, the experts, and families. So plan on visiting us and make the most of your future outdoor adventures. Sign up for the series or a single skill session.

The series is presented by SAIL Cambridge to provide you with the skills you need to enjoy the outdoors. SAIL will be bringing a range of gear for you to try. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm to learn and a bag lunch.

Pre-registration is required. Sign up for the series or a single session. The cost is $20 per person or $50 for the three sessions. Admission fee required, or free for our Grand River Parks Membership holders. Participants must be over the age of 10 and accompanied by an adult. Children over the age 12 are welcome to attend on their own.

Please dress appropriately for the weather. You will be spending most of the time outdoors. Lunch is not provided.

Fire Making

February 25, 2018 10 am - 2:30 pm (1/2 hour lunch break)

If you have watched any survivor shows you will know that being able to start a fire is a critical skill to have. Learn to start a fire with natural materials using various methods including matches, ferro rod, flint and steel, along with bow drill. You will also gain an understanding of various types of fire making that can best suit the situation you are in, such as warming a shelter, cooking food or survival in cold temperatures. Presented by SAIL Cambridge.

Outdoor Navigation

March 25, 2018 10 am - 2:30 pm (1/2 hour lunch break)

You will never be lost if you can use a compass. In this session you will learn how to use a compass in the field, read a topographic map and use the map and compass together to find your way. You will learn the skills and techniques to blaze your own trail or find your way out of the wilderness when lost. Presented by SAIL Cambridge.

Shelter Building & Knots

April 29, 2018 10 am - 2:30 pm (1/2 hour lunch break)

When you think about outdoor survival you likely don't think about ropes and knots, but knowing how to tie the right knot for the situation is a critical outdoor skill. It is also a lot of fun! You will learn various shelter building techniques using natural materials, tarps and even hammock setup, along with knots used when building shelters and setting up camp in the outdoors. Presented by SAIL Cambridge.
