Event description
Join us October 5, 6 & 7 for "Shades of Africa" a three day conference reflecting on the lived experiences of youth from African descent.

About this Event

Shades of Africa is a follow up to the Ubuntu conference held in June of 2019, an initiative led by Nicole Mizzi, who was then from Legal Aid. The Ubuntu conference was in response to the over-representation of young people from Sudan and South Sudan in the criminal justice system. The goal was to have partners, particularly within the justice system, to understand the trauma and history of the youth coming from these countries in the hopes that more treatment and trauma-informed practices could be employed – outside of pure incarceration.

This year the conference name has changed from Ubuntu, to Shades of Africa, to reflect a growing number of young people from Africa descent becoming involved in the criminal justice system; as well as their over-representation in child welfare systems and alternative education streams. This year, the focus is on incorporating the spirit of reconciliation with that of providing a voice to the community, youth and professionals of colour from Africa.

The discussion and topics presented over the three days will follow up on the discussions of last year’s conference while also touching on the important conversations that are currently happening globally. In the first two days, participants will have the opportunity to hear various perspectives and lived experiences; with the third day being reserved for examples and discussions on how systems can respond more holistically to the lived experiences of this demographic.

Please join us on October 5th, 6th and 7th for "Shades of Africa" - a three day conference reflecting on truth and reconciliation for children and youth and bridging the gap between the newcomer community and their allies.
