ABOUT THE EVENT

Nutrition Connections is hosting Shifting the feeding and eating conversation – An introduction to Satter Feeding Dynamics and Eating Competence presented by the Ellyn Satter Institute March 5th, 2020 in Toronto, Ontario.

This workshop will provide a deeper understanding of the Satter Feeding Dynamics Model (fdSatter) and the Satter Eating Competence Model (ecSatter), along with strategies for application. Case examples addressing common child nutritional problems will be used to coach participants in identifying feeding dynamics issues and how to talk to parents about them. This workshop will provide health professionals and service providers working with children and families with a consistent approach to nutrition education rooted in feeding dynamics and eating competence principles.

In this introductory, full-day workshop, participants will:

  • Learn the evidence-based principles of the Satter Feeding Dynamics Model and the Satter Eating Competence Model through interactive activities.
  • Use real-life scenarios to examine the concept of stage-related eating competence, including the critical importance of the family meal.
  • Work through case studies to explore Satter Division of Responsibility-based intervention strategies that address common feeding problems.
  • Develop methods for engaging families and other service organizations to integrate feeding dynamics-based interventions into practice.

 Participants will come away from the workshop with:

  • An increased understanding of the adult's and child's role in the feeding relationship,
  • Evidence-based methods for creating positive mealtimes with young children;
  • Practical tips for having a dialogue with children and parents about feeding issues; and,
  • Resources and tools to support the implementation of the feeding dynamics and eating competence models in their setting.
