Description

You're invited to an enchanting evening in a beautiful garden at Shoresh's annual Summer Soiree. Join us for a light nosh while we learn from local experts about how they are building a more sustainable food system in our community.

Our panel of speakers includes:

Sabrina Malach: Pollinator conservationist and resident beekeeper at Bela Farm

Sabrina Malach is Shoresh’s Director of Engagement and resident Jewish beekeeper. Sabrina cares for the apiary of 30 hives at Bela Form, Shoresh’s 114-acre rural center for sustainable land-based Judaism in Hillsburgh, Ontario. Sabrina got an M.A in Environmental Studies from York University with a focus on pollinator protection in urban centres. She takes an action oriented approach advocating for pollinator protection, providing education, and creating pollinator habitat across the GTA.

BUFCO - The Backyard Urban Farm Company:

Marc Green and Arlene Hazzan Green, are the co-owners of The Backyard Urban Farm Company. Their mission is to ignite people’s passion for growing their own food, and to help them reconnect with Nature. Marc and Arlene will share their transformative experience doing urban agriculture on themselves, the community, and our planet.

Darlene Litman: Heritage chicken enthusiast and backyard chicken advocate

Darlene began keeping chickens in her Toronto backyard in 2007, and has since never been without fresh eggs for her family. She runs the website TorontoChickens.com, organizes backyard chicken-keeping workshops, and successfully lobbied the municipal government to change the Toronto bylaw to legalize backyard hens. Having worked in the food industry for over 30 years, she appreciates the value of food as nature intended.

Moderater - Danny Richmond:

Danny is the National Project Director at Parliament of the World's Religions and a Shoresh board member. He strives to catalyze people across the country to pursue a more inclusive and just world. He has over a decade of experience in youth leadership, community mobilization, and international development. As a public speaker, Danny has presented to over 25,000 people about social activism and global citizenship. In addition, he has served on numerous leadership and advisory boards related to international humanitarian issues, national engagement initiatives, and a variety of local causes.
