Event description
Benefit concert Shpylyasti Kobzari with Live Bandura Show and The Ukrainian Dnipro Choir of Edmonton

About this Event

Ukrainian folk group playing traditional Ukrainian string instruments, banduras. The band`s name reflects the spirit of their creativity: Shpylyasti means funny and cheerful, while kobzari were the folk singers who played traditional Ukrainian musical instrument.

Combining folk songs with modern music such as jazz, rock, electro house and hip-hop, famous dance hits or retro songs, Shpylyasti Kobzari promotes Ukrainian culture – among local audience as well as abroad.

Shpylyasti Kobzari was founded in 2011 and quickly became famous thanks to the TV show “Ukraine’s Got Talent.” Apart from Ukraine, the band has toured about 20 countries. While abroad Shpylyasti Kobzari plays to promote Ukrainian culture, at home the band plays to promote bandura.

The band also often plays in orphanages and schools, and makes charity appearances. During one such show in May of 2017, they played for people with hearing impairments. For this show, each of the band’s members learned a song in a sign language.

The band does not shun the old traditional songs, and try hard to preserve the authenticity of Ukrainian folk music. At the same time they experiment with these songs, modernizing them. This is what they see the future in.
