Contemporary Classical Music Composition

On May 29th, we will be hosting two contemporary classical music composers, Lesley Hinger and Vincent Ho for a conversation with Katherine Duncan about what is contemporary classical music, how is attempts to redefine centuries old traditions, the challenges facing young composers and how to listen and understand it. The works of both Leslie and Vincent will be performed live by a string trio.

Lesley Hinger - Composer

Lesley composes acoustic and electroacoustic music, and her works have been performed and workshopped across Canada, the US, and Italy by various ensembles including the Arditti String Quartet, Sound Icon, Land's End Chamber Ensemble, Ensemble Contemporain de Montreal, L'Orchestre de la Francophonie, Ensemble L'Arsenale, Strata Ensemble, the Violet Collective, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Lesley earned her Doctorate in Composition at Boston University studying under Joshua Fineberg, and is the co-founder of the Boston- based Acoustic Uproar concert series. Lesley currently lives in Calgary, Alberta.

Vincent Ho - Composer

Vincent Ho is a multi-award winning composer of orchestral, chamber, vocal, and theatre music. His works have been described as "brilliant and compelling" by the New York Times and hailed for their profound expressiveness and textural beauty, leaving audiences talking about them with great enthusiasm. HIs many awards have included Harvard University's Fromm Music Commission, the Canada Council for the Arts Robert Fleming Prize, ASCAP's Morton Gould Young Composer Award, four SOCAN Young Composers Awards, and CBC Radios Audience Choice Award (2009 Young Composers Competition). Dr. Ho is currently teaching at the University of Calgary.

Katherine Duncan - Moderator

A classically trained musician, singer in Calgary's Spiritus Chamber Choir, and lover of books, food, wine and travel, Katherine Duncan shares her passion for music with CBC listeners as host and producer of Radio 2's Choral Concert. Following up six years as host of the award-winning classical music news show, In Tune, Duncan presents classical master-works on the Radio 2 program Centre Stage. Katherine has accepted the prestigious role of being the Jury Forperson for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize. Locally, she discovers and presents original music by emerging Alberta Artists on the CBC Radio One's Key of A.
