Sigurd Lewerentz: Architect of Death and Life/ de la mort et de la vie

L’architecte suédois Sigurd Lewerentz (1885-1975) est une figure clé de l’histoire de l’architecture moderne, mais son influence s’est développée lentement et de manière organique grâce à l’enthousiasme des critiques et des praticiens pour son œuvre après sa mort. Le centre suédois pour l’architecture et le design (ArkDes) a récemment consacré une exposition de référence à sa vie et à son œuvre, organisée par Johan Örn et Kieran Long, et a publié la monographie Sigurd Lewerentz : Architect of Death and Life. Au cours de cet entretien, Kieran Long parlera de l’œuvre de Lewerentz, de la conservation des milliers d’objets qui composent les archives de Lewerentz et de la manière dont la tension entre l’œuvre de Lewerentz et le modernisme dominant soulève des questions sur la citoyenneté, la technologie et l’État-providence.

Kieran Long est le directeur d’ArkDes, à Stockholm. Il était auparavant le responsable du design, de l’architecture et du numérique au Victoria & Albert Museum de Londres. Il est écrivain, critique, enseignant et conservateur en architecture et en design depuis plus de vingt ans.

The Swedish architect Sigurd Lewerentz (1885–1975) is a key figure in the history of modern architecture, but his influence grew slowly and organically thanks to the enthusiasm of critics and practitioners for his work since his death. The Swedish centre for architecture and design (ArkDes) recently opened a definitive exhibition on his life and work, curated by Johan Örn and Kieran Long, and published the monograph Sigurd Lewerentz: Architect of Death and Life. In this talk, Long speaks about the work of Lewerentz, about curating the thousands of objects in Lewerentz’s archive, and about how the tension between Lewerentz’s life’s work and mainstream modernism raises question about citizenship, technology, and the welfare state.

Kieran Long is the director of ArkDes, Stockholm. He was previously the Keeper of Design, Architecture, and Digital at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and has been a writer, critic, teacher, and curator of architecture and design for over twenty years.
