Event Details

This course is the perfect introduction to the world of research into simulation-based education and healthcare quality improvement. We will explore the milieu of simulation research and scholarship, as well as the current state of the literature with respect to simulation. Participants will refine their own research interests, complete a literature review on a topic of interest, and generate their own research question.

The Primer was developed and will be facilitated by leading simulation and healthcare education researchers from around Ontario, representing multiple professions and academic backgrounds, giving you a variety of perspectives and ideas. No prior educational research training or experience is necessary.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Summarize the research cycle, from conceptualization to knowledge transfer.
  2. Review the healthcare simulation literature to identify gaps and the context for a research idea.
  3. Explain various models used to evaluate simulations.
  4. Generate a researchable question about simulation.

Course Format

This course will employ a web-based distance learning format to keep it accessible to all participants. To ensure it will be engaging and motivating, the course adopts a “flipped” approach: each week, there is a video-recorded lecture to watch, a short homework assignment to consolidate and apply knowledge, then an interactive 1-hour live webinar to discuss the topic with an expert researcher, review the assignment and ask questions. The course takes 9 weeks.

A high-speed internet connection from a location that does not block webconferencing software is required. A VoIP headset or computer microphone is recommended. This course includes assigned readings form academic journals, so digital access to articles through a library is helpful.

Ryan Brydges, The Wilson Centre
