SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival - Workshop Series

11 a.m. - Registration and networking

12 noon - New York Voices masterclass - Meet the New York Voices

During the workshop, they discuss the history of the group, their influences, their approach to four-part singing, some group improvisation, some Q&A time.
Celebrating 30 years of touring and recording, critically-acclaimed New Y ork Voices has refined their musical story to a high art..They are known for their close-knit voicings, inspired arrangements and unparalleled vocal blend. With deep interests rooted in jazz, Brazilian, R & B, classical, and pop, their music mixes traditional sensibilities with more than a dash of the unexpected. NYV has traveled the globe with their elegant music, amazing audiences the world over with their impeccable voices and stunning arrangements. They are one of the top vocal groups in the world.

1:30 p.m. - Blue Jupiter “Rockstar 101” workshop: Star of Lifetime’s TV show Pitchslapped, Diana Preisler is known as “The ACA-COACH.” Diana says this: “They see you louder than they hear you.” The Broadway performer, film actress (Oscar Nominated “Chico and Rita”), singer and manager of Blue Jupiter will show you how to make that message work for you. Groups will hop on stage and have their performance crafted to perfection. Have your group come ready to volunteer to perform!

From New York City, Blue Jupiter's all-vocal performance is nothing short of explosive! The world-touring a cappella quartet has been described as “The real deal,” by rock legend, Gene Simmons; "Simply terrific" by Scott Conant of Food Network, “Incredible!”by Jane Pauly from NBC; “Nothing short of magic,” by the Sands Casino Entertainment Department, and “Simply the best music act we’ve ever had at our schools,” by the Connecticut Public Schools Board. Blue Jupiter’s energetic blend of pop lead vocals, jazzy a cappella harmony and funky beatbox has garnered standing ovations in over 40 states and around the world.

3:00 p.m. - musica intima vocal ensemble:: Collaborative Leadership in A Cappella Choral Singing
An inside look at how leadership and collaboration function together within an a cappella ensemble setting, lead by internationally recognized vocal ensemble, musica intima. This workshop will look at group vocal technique as well as rehearsal and performance practice.

Internationally renowned for their warm and engaging stage presence, impeccable musicianship, and unique perspective on ensemble singing, musica intima has earned a reputation as Canada’s most exciting vocal ensemble. Founded in 1992, musica intima has become an integral part of Canada’s cultural fabric. A distinctly Canadian ensemble, musica intima regularly commissions, champions and premieres works by Canada’s leading composers including Michael Osterle, Ana Sokolovic, José Evangelista, Peter Hannan, Jocelyn Morlock, Keith Hamel, Jordan Nobles, Jennifer Butler, and Jeffrey Ryan.

The ensemble has graced the stages of some of Canada’s best known festivals, championing contemporary Canadian vocal repertoire in concert halls such as Orford Festival, Elora Festival, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, Festival de Lanaudière, Palais Montcalm, and the Domaine Forget International Festival.

4:15 p.m. – Better Solo Singer = Better A Cappella Singer with Elaine Overholt of Big Voice Studios

Get ready to dig in to the true power and depth of your primal vocal sound and pair it with your most powerful performance magic. It’s not rocket science!
Celebrity coach and mentor to A-List celebrities (think John Travolta, Ellen DeGeneres, Sean Mendes, Queen Latifah, Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones), host of her own “Big Voice TV” series and singer herself (a cappella too!) with the likes of Ray Charles, Paul Shaffer, Tina Turner, Anne Murray, Elaine will challenge you to look for the magic in every single note, syllable and word of every single line of your song.
If you wish to participate, come with a short solo verse or chorus of your best song. As time permits, we will go through the fear and find your outrageousness! You’ll see why that will also make you a better a cappella singer. Elaine and her team coach young and not-so-young emerging talent seven days a week at her Big Voice Studios in Toronto.
