About this event

Webinar #1 - Welfare of dogs and cats during veterinary visits: Should we be premedicating our patients?

Presented by Dr. Karen Overall, MA, VMD, PhD, DACVB

How much distress is acceptable when a dog is undergoing a veterinary evaluation? Are there benchmarks that suggest we should stop and use medication to help manage fear, anxiety, and distress? How do we know when and how to do this? What about the dog or cat that can readily be examined, vaccinated, and have blood drawn simply because they do not engage at all due to fear? What is normal behaviour at a vet’s office? These questions and their answers will form the introduction to this talk, which will focus on making decisions about alleviating suffering that we may cause, however much we did not intend to do so. The talk will involve a discussion of medications that may be useful, alone or in combination, and will feature a series of flow charts with the intent of providing guidance to ensure that our patients do not learn that we are threats.

Webinar #2 - New approaches to minimizing stress and distress when handling dogs and cats.

Presented by Dr. Karen Overall, MA, VMD, PhD, DACVB

“Restraint” means many things to many people, and whether it is “light” or “heavy” restraint may be unclear. What does restraint mean to a patient and how are we changing the way we make decisions about this? Do we need to “restrain” patients to handle them? Can we achieve the goals of restraint – safety for everyone and the ability to accomplish the needed task – in ways that minimize fear and distress for everyone? We are beginning to rethink downstream effects of restraint. This talk will focus on some of the neurochemical effects of restraint and newer data showing alternative approaches that may keep us all safer and allow us to practice medication in way that benefits everyone.

Webinar #3 - What’s new, hot and important in veterinary behaviour and behavioural medicine literature?

Presented by Dr. Karen Overall, MA, VMD, PhD, DACVB

The best of the veterinary behaviour and behavioural medicine literature is published in journals that are not readily accessible to busy veterinary teams. We will review a subset of recent hot publications with surprising findings that have clinical applications meaningful for your patients.
