Description

Sisters of the Ice: St. Roch & North Star of Herschel Island
in the Arctic - with sailor and author Bruce Macdonald
Thursday, November 22, 2018 at 7:30pm

Sisters Of The Ice tells the previously untold tale of two iconic Canadian ships and their famous captains. St. Roch's Henry Larsen and North Star of Herschel Island's Fred Carpenter dominated the western Canadian Arctic for decades and stories of their roles in defending Canadian Arctic sovereignty are still talked about today. What many people don't know about is their friendship and mutual respect for one another. In this lecture will be excerpts from Larsen's writing, previously unreleased journal entries, and new interviews with Inuit who witnessed all of this. Many recently discovered photos of the ships and those who sailed in them will illustrate the talk.

R. Bruce Macdonald is a Canadian sailor and author. He has had several hundred articles published in magazines and journals worldwide, is the former contributing editor of Sailing Canada magazine and wrote for and edited a popular cruising guide series. He is the former Captain of the brigantine Pathfinder, a tall ship that he commanded for many years on the Great Lakes. He and his wife, Sheila, have owned and operated North Star of Herschel Island for 22 years.
