Description

Looking for skaters and volunteers for a trial session for SkateABLE!

SkateABLE is an adapative, learn-to-skate program for those with developmental or physical disabilities ( skateable.ca ).

It is already running in Waterloo, Toronto, London, Ottawa and Guelph, and now we have the opportunity to bring it to the Soo!

Thanks to Luke Gjos and the Healthy Kids Community Challenge Sault Ste. Marie we are able to offer a trial session, which is a prerequisite to setting up the programme.

The trial session happens in the spring, with a view to setting up lessons in the fall. Skaters work with volunteers on a 1:1 basis.

All adaptive equipment (walkers, harnesses) is supplied. Skaters must provide their own non-adaptive equipment (ie. figure or hockey skates and a CSA approved hockey helmet)

The number of spots will depend on the number of volunteers we can secure.

We are looking for volunteers, who are patient and who are strong skaters.

Ideally we will secure enough volunteers so that 8-10 skaters with developmental or physical disabilities can participate in a free, trial session of Skateable.

So please be aware that we will take your registrations for skaters on a first-come, first-served basis, but please wait for our confirmation that we have a volunteer to work with your skater.

Skaters: skaters with developmental and/or physical disabilities.

Trial session on April 14th: Skateable offers a one-hour orientation with the volunteers.

Skateable will bring two facilitators to brief the volunteers and oversee the trial as well as the on-ice program delivery, and adaptive skating equipment

Offering a trial gives people the opportunity to see what their program is all about.

The objective will be to begin regular programming in the fall.

Fall Programming: A typical 9-week program of 1 hour lessons will cost $175. The full season (fall/winter) would be $350.

The registration fees cover all of the expenses related to running the program, including ice permits, program supplies, head coach fees, fees related to training volunteers, and insurance.

Volunteers are needed for:

- the trial session on April 14th, including for a one-hour orientation session, and for the hour on-ice.

- the fall session. In the fall, Skateable will offer a full training session for volunteers which includes disability awareness training, behavior management strategies, adaptive equipment training, and skating skill modification/lesson planning.

Volunteers have the opportunity to earn a coaching certification in the HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development upon completing the training. Ideally, volunteers will be available for the full session once programming begins.

This is an opportunity for students to earn their community hours.
