Event description

Description

Please join us on Thursday, October 19, 2017 for our 8th EMMA Talks!

with, Salia Joseph and Chief Janice George

  • The evening starts at 6 pm for a pre-talk living room style reception, where there will be free light snacks, a cash bar, and some interactive art-making!
  • The Talks will begin at 7 pm sharp, and will be proceeded by a 30 min social gathering (come for 6 pm to meet everyone!)

We are thrilled to be co-creating this EMMA with our Guest Curator, Michelle Nahanee!

Increased visibility of Coast Salish women on our lands can mean more than inviting us to do an opening or asking us to sing our ancestral songs, so what's next?

Our strength and hope and gentle power are rooted in understandings of transformation, which are much deeper than identity constructions. Centring Sḵwx̱wú7mesh matriarchal approaches can inform the relationship models we need to move beyond neocolonial violence and continued erasure.

Meet four Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Matriarchs who carry the Teachings of One of the Host Nations of this Land called Vancouver. - Michelle Lorna Nahanee, co-curator

Both social gatherings will be in place of a Q & A and will allow for folks to meet one another, to converse and share thoughts from the talks. co-hosted by SFU.

*there will be some seating available during the reception

Mutual Aid:

we are soliciting donations for two reasons:

1. 50% of donations* will go to the speaker’s choice of cause/project/individuals (details coming soon)

2. 50% will go towards paying all the tech and support staff

*you can donate when you get your ticket, or during the event -- thanks!

Partners*:

Our core partner for this EMMA Talks is with SFU’s Vancity Community Engagement.

*We are open to partner with other interested groups! In doing so, we are able to support our grassroots initiatives and also pay everyone involved, including women technicians — something that is very important to us.
