About this event

Slagflower and Other Songs: Vocal Music of Owen Bloomfield is a virtual concert performed by soprano Marion Samuel-Stevens, pianist Irene Gregorio and recorded by Chestnut Hall Music for streaming 7PM EST on May 15, 2021. The concert has been made possible with a generous grant from the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund.

Owen Bloomfield is a composer and musician based in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. His works have been performed across Canada and in the US and Europe. He has written many interdisciplinary works with a number of the pieces from these works being featured in this concert, some of which have been premiered by Marion Samuel-Stevens.

Marion has been praised for her subtle interpretations of text and character and for her warm, supple voice. She is an avid supporter of new opera and chamber performance and has had the pleasure of debuting several new works under the guidance of playwrights and composers within both Canada and the United States.

The concert includes the world premiere of Slagflower Songs, a song cycle using the recent poems of Thomas Leduc that study the complexities of life in a mining community and its universalities.

Marion and Irene will be joined by Tilly Kooyman on bass clarinet.
