Slow Meat Day + Tasters!

The event is FREE to attend, however separate registration is required for the free demos in the Network Hub, as space is limited.
Tickets for Slow Meat Tasters are available for $12 for those who would like to sample 2 slow meat dishes from participating River Market restaurants. Tasters are available online NOW and will not be available at the door.
Slow Meat Tasters
Try various slow meat dishes from participating River Market restaurants with Slow Meat Tasters! Taster tickets can be used at the restaurants from 11am until close. Participating restaurants and their slow meat sample dish include:
- Re-Up BBQ - Slow smoked heritage pork pasture-raised by Blue Sky Ranch with house-made BBQ sauce & creamy slaw
- Wild Rice Market Bistro - Braised Organic Beef from Blue Goose Cattle Co open face Bao with pickled veg, scallion verde, horseradish aioli (one piece)
What is Slow Meat? Less Meat, Better Quality
Slow Meat is meat raised humanely, naturally and with minimal impact on the environment. It is a fair deal for producers and processors. It is public understanding and appreciation of meat’s value. By eating less meat of better quality, we would create enormous benefits for our health, the farming system and the quality of the air, soil and water. (Slow Food USA)
Event Details and Schedule
As an addition to the BC Farmers' Markets conference, we are collaborating with Slow Food Canada and the River Market to host a Slow Meat Day.
When: Sunday, March 5; 2pm-6pm
Where: River Market (810 Quayside Dr. New Westminster)
2pm: Event opens; Slow Meat Market vendors & displays include:
- 4-H British Columbia
- BC Association of Farmers' Markets
- Italian Cultural Centre
- Slow Food Canada
- Tsawassen Farm School
- Vancity Credit Union
2:30pm-3pm: Welcome and keynote with Julia Smith (Urban Digs Farm, Blue Sky Ranch) and Richard McCarthy (Slow Food USA) - in the Network Hub space
What sits at the center of what’s wrong with our food system? The imposition of industrial meat upon rural livelihoods, ecologies, animals, and diets. In short, the culture of confinement undermines the generation of wealth and the regeneration of ecosystems. Slow Meat is the global campaign for better meat, less meat. What can we practically do to promote the ranchers and multi-species farmers who are doing it right; and engage consumers to tackle the tyranny of cheap meat by paying for better, and learning to love less meat?
3:30pm-4:15pm: Hog butchering demo with Filipe Carballo (Urban Digs Farm/Blue Sky Ranch)- in the Network Hub space
4:30pm-5:15pm: Cooking demo: "Slow Meat on a Budget" with Chef Tee-Jae Conwi (Executive Chef, Delta Hotels Vancouver Suites) - in the Network Hub space
6pm: Event closes
BC Association of Farmers' Markets is partnering with Slow Meat Canada, the River Market, the Royal City Farmers' Market, and The Network Hub to create this event. Vancity Credit Union is providing financial and organizational support.
