The Smart Track Series, presented by Mydene Cuevas, Sarah Ng and Colleen Ma, aims to educate entrepreneurs with the legal issues that commonly affect startups. The presenters will cover subject matters in corporate, intellectual property and tax law that startups and early stage companies often face as they launch and grow their ideas into successful businesses.
The Smart Track Series will follow the startup journey of the founders of a million dollar idea from the beginning of the idea’s inception to its accelerated growth. Mydene Cuevas is a corporate commercial lawyer with Miles Davison LLP. Mydene works with entrepreneurs, businesses and corporations to assist them with the full range of their legal needs. She represents clients on matters including mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and financial transactions. Sarah Ng is a lawyer, patent and trademark agent with the Intellectual Property & Innovation Group at Parlee McLaws. Sarah deals primarily with patents, industrial designs, and trademarks and the protection of intellectual property more generally. Sarah's focus is on drafting and prosecuting patent and industrial design applications in a range of fields. Her background in technology transfer and commercialization with the University of Alberta and her prior studies in Chemistry and Biochemistry give her particular insight into engineering, chemical, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, and biotechnological fields. Sarah is regularly involved in a range of intellectual property matters including providing infringement, patentability, and validity opinions, licensing and other transactional agreements, and support for litigation involving intellectual property. Colleen Ma is a tax lawyer with Parlee McLaws’ LLP in Calgary. Her experience includes corporate and personal tax planning, trust and estate planning, corporate reorganizations, and tax dispute resolution. Colleen’s practice also includes advising on GST/HST matters. She has a particular interest in business issues including succession planning, farm transition planning, minimizing taxation on death, and the tax-efficient separation of corporate matrimonial property. Colleen has completed the CBA Tax Law for Lawyers program and the CPA In-Depth HST/GST course. She is currently enrolled in the CPA In-Depth Tax Course with an expected completion date of 2018.
