Social Media Breakfast Calgary #67
8:30 am – 10:30 am, Friday, August 28th, 2015
Tuxedo Park Community Association

Calgary Social Media Breakfast (SMByyc) is pleased to announce the August 2015 Topic:  Engagement is Hard Work

Your business or non-profit has a story, but to achieve results you must engage with your supporters and donors.

Join us as our morning moderator, Lori Stewart chats with Theo Fleury & Amber Craig about Breaking Free Foundation.  Learn how they are developing connections with their audience while providing an online support hub for the trauma community.

The conversation will continue as Lori talks with Joni Avram & Deb Tomlinson about an ambitious public awareness campaign that will launch on Monday, August 31s through the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services.  Preparing for effective engagement takes much planning. Find out what Joni and Deb have learned during this process.

Tuxedo Park Community Association has graciously offered to host #SMByyc67.

Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids will supply breakfast and will share how they work with Calgarians to identify kids who would otherwise go without and find ways to feed them.

Our breakfast sponsor this month is YOU.  Breakfast is free to attend.  However this month we are giving you the opportunity to support Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids.  Suggested donation is $5 – all dollars collected will be donated to BB4CK. Every dollar provides one lunch for a child, so your $5 donation will provide 5 lunches for kids in our city!

Seating is limited.  Please RSVP at SMByyc67

If you are not able to attend, follow and join in on the discussion @SMByyc via #SMByyc67.

Moderator:   Lori Stewart

Lori came to Calgary in 2004 after spending a rather adventurous 5 years in California during the tech boom where she built and launched eBay Canada and then led the rapid expansion and globalization of eBay - including the acquisition of Paypal. Lori was part of the core Nenshi strategy team and helped build the brand that is Naheed Nenshi. Following the election she went with Naheed to City Hall as acting Chief of Staff and built out the Mayor's new team. Lori was the founder of Awesome Foundation, Calgary providing micro-financing for micro-brilliance - "1 great idea + 90 second pitch = $1000".

Whether it's a new start-up or a civic election, success is always driven by 3 key factors - "having the right idea, at the right time - with the right team to pull it off." The intuition to know when all of those factors align is when an idea can be truly successful. Lori sits on the board of numerous software companies, is a member of Alberta Deal Generator and maintains strong contacts to the VC world and Silicon Valley tech communities. Her big goal is to mentor young ideas here in Calgary and help foster this city as a long-term, world-class technology and innovation centre.

Lori has recently joined the Board of Directors of Newton Energy, a publicly traded energy company transitioning from traditional Oil & Gas sector to be active in the evolution of the energy economy. Watch for exciting news in 2015.  She has also joined the Board of Directors of Aspen Family & Community Network Society.  Aspen gives Calgarians in need a permanent way out of poverty by creating a plan and supporting every child, teen, family and community to achieve a poverty-free future.

To ensure that she has no free time, Lori has founded MVOP Innovations Inc., an experiential game-application that helps young girls become self-confident adults and leaders in the future.

The Breaking Free Foundation Mission: To provide survivors of traumatic life events with the treatment and support needed to reclaim their lives.

BFF goal: We want to be a trusted online hub that connects the community to resources and support for those who have experienced trauma, and those who want to learn more. Our second goal with BFF is to make trauma healing accessible to everyone, regardless of economic status. Healing is possible, and the tools and resources to help should be available to everyone. We want to pave the road for trauma healing and create valuable conversations about mental health, trauma and abuse. Removing the stigma, starting the healing, one day at a time.

Charity:  Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids

Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids works in partnership with Calgary schools to make and deliver free healthy lunches for students who would otherwise go hungry.  2,500 lunches are made and delivered daily to schools by volunteers working as part of community groups in kitchens throughout the city, or in BB4CK’s downtown Kitchen. Since April 2015, the number of kids who receive a lunch each day from BB4CK has grown by 175; this September, that number is expected to increase again.  Nourishment is available free of charge to any young person who arrives at school without enough to eat. BB4CK works with school staff members to identify needs and to plan how best to make sure hungry students get the nutrition they require. By enabling better education outcomes, BB4CK gives students a hand up, not a handout – lunch provides a chance to learn, and opportunity to participate, and ultimately, confidence.
