Event Details

The Canadian Institute of Resources Law invites you to attend a free public lecture entitled:

“Ready or Not, Recreational Marijuana is Coming: An Overview of the Legal Landscape and the Regulatory Challenges for Policy-Makers"

Legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada is just around the corner.  The federal government has legislation in place and the provinces have been unveiling their regulatory strategies over the past few months. This seminar will explore these new federal and provincial laws, with a focus on Alberta’s reforms. For example, we will address such questions as how many plants individuals can grow in their homes, age restrictions on the possession of cannabis, who can sell cannabis products, rules on public consumption, and whether cannabis can be purchased online. This seminar will also address related changes to other laws, such as those governing impaired driving. The impact of cannabis legalization will have far-reaching effects on public health, policing, and the economy.  We will explore some of these policy challenges, along with future legal challenges, such as the anticipated legalization of edible cannabis products.

Dr. Lorian Hardcastle will be the presenter.

Lorian Hardcastle is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary, where she is also a member of the O'Brien Institute for Public Health.  She obtained her J.D. with Health Law and Policy Specialization Certificate from Dalhousie University, and her masters and doctorate from the University of Toronto.  Lorian also completed a fellowship at the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University Law Center.  Her research interests include regulation and governance of the health care system, hospital and governmental liability and accountability, patient safety, health system organization and finance, comparative health policy, and the regulation of health professionals.  Lorian's work has been published in numerous legal and health policy journals including the Canadian Medical Association Journal, University of Pennsylvania Law Review, Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics, Alberta Law Review, and Queen's Law Journal.

This event is sponsored by the Alberta Law Foundation.
