GroundSwell 2014 Season

Canzona @ GroundSwell: Music of Mind and Body
Monday, March 3, 2014, 8pm
Crescent Fort Rouge United Church

Curator: Jim Hiscott

Inspired by spirituality, meditation and a mysterious experience in a French prison, GroundSwell curator Jim Hiscott invites us into a musical exploration of mind and body. Canzona, Winnipeg’s outstanding chamber choir is joined by WSO violinist Karl Stobbe, genre-defying bass clarinettist Lori Freedman and Xiao-Nan Wang playing the traditional Chinese dizi in a concert of brand new works. Blending choral and instrumental, ancient and modern, Canzona @ GroundSwell will stir both your mind and soul.

Swedish Invasion: the peärls before swïne experience
Sunday, March 30, 2014, 8pm
Convocation Hall, University of Winnipeg

Curator: Gordon Fitzell

Virtuosic Swedish quartet the peärls before swïne experience take us on a rambunctious ride through some of Sweden’s hottest new music in a multi-sensory evening featuring experimental film, live soundtracks, electronics, and rocking performances – plus a special premiere by Winnipeg’s own Örjan Sandred. Swedish Invasion will be a feast for the eyes, ears and beyond!

Ether / Aura: The Sounds of Iceland
presented in partnership with núna (now)
Monday, April 28, 2014, 8pm
Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, University of Winnipeg

Guest Curator: William Pura

Ether / Aura is a remarkable concert featuring the surprising and sublime music of Iceland’s top composers from the past 50 years. With a focus on Jon Leif’s beautiful folk-inspired songs, the concert ranges from Áskell Másson’s Prim for solo snare drum - a favourite of Dame Evelyn Glennie - to an Icelandic hommage by guest curator William Pura. This evening is a special presentation in partnership with núna (now), Winnipeg’s Icelandic arts convergence.

Wagner vs Stein: A Clash of Titans (remix version)
Thursday, May 22, 2014, 8pm
Rachel Browne Theatre

Curator: Diana McIntosh

Two incredible artists invite us deep into the worlds of two creative titans: Richard Wagner and Gertrude Stein. In the first half,
Berlin-based Canadian performance artist Myra Davies presents The 40-Minute Ring, a fast and funny multi-disciplinary dash through Hitler's favourite action fantasy. In the second Diana McIntosh gives us a glimpse into the playful and profound mind of Gertrude Stein in McIntosh the Stein Way – a theatrical multi-media take on the writings of Gertrude Stein and one of McIntosh’s best-loved works.
